The paper analyzes the philosophical and sociological heritage of understanding health, ways to preserve and strengthen it. It is shown that the definition of the essence of the phenomenon of health by scientists was carried out in the context of such approaches as holistic, discursive, evolutionary, sociocultural, normocentric, axiological, phenomenological, anthropocentric, acmeological, adaptive, etc. The conducted theoretical analysis of health models (five-dimensional, four-sphere and three-component pyramidal) allowed to substantiate the effectiveness of the use of four-sphere model for sociological research, which contains components of physical, mental, social and spiritual health, which together determine the state of the health.
