Документ The crisis of antibiotic resistance on the example of staphylococcus aureus: History and current status of the problem(Харків : Харківський національний університет імені В. Н. Каразіна, 2022) Tsoi, Kateryna VolodymyrivnaSince the introduction of bacterial theory into medicine in the second half of the 19th century, mankind has been looking for effective means to combat microorganisms that cause diseases. After the discovery of antibiotics, humanity had hope for an undisputed victory in this struggle. However, soon enough it became clear that some microorganisms can develop resistance to certain antibiotics. Thus began an endless struggle for survival between humanity, which develops more and more powerful antibiotics, and pathogens that adapt to each new weapon against them. This struggle has now reached a critical point, which is why it has been called the "antibiotic resistance crisis" in the scientific literature. A vivid illustration of the emergence and development of this crisis is the history of S. aureus: it was during experiments with this microorganism that the first antibiotic (penicillin) was discovered, and later this pathogen turned out to be the most capable of acquiring resistance to the most powerful antibiotics (even methicillin, the development of which was initially aimed specifically at combating S. aureus, soon ceased to be an effective remedy against it). This makes it extremely important and relevant to study the history of the development of the antibiotic resistance crisis and its current state in the example of S. aureus. Despite the long-term struggle of medicine with S. aureus, this pathogen still develops its resistance to antibiotics and continues to be the cause of death of many people, which is only part of the overall crisis of antibiotic resistance, which has reached critical proportions in our time. However, medicine has many means to overcome this crisis, which are currently being actively discussed in the scientific literature.
