Boosting Students’ Motivation for Vocabulary Building with Original Movies

The paper addresses the problem of maintaining students’ motivation to learn the syllabus-assigned vocabulary taken from classical texts. It suggests several ways of providing students with evidence, often such they have obtained themselves, of such classics-borrowed vocabulary being plentifully used in real-life contexts. Effective in this regard appears cross-checking the above-mentioned vocabulary with currently popular movies or TV shows, preferably to some degree mirroring real-world problems and environments. The paper particularly focuses on the benefits of making students investigate such movies for the under-study vocabulary to share their findings in class, and of first showing them the instructor-prepared compilations containing the vocabulary under study. This addition to the traditional learning routine helps breathe life into the “active” vocabulary, makes the memorizing process more motivated and effective, and favorably affects students’ attitude to classics.

Literature is a product of the human mind. The latter is shaped and continuously influenced by the social environment its owner is confined to. Therefore, as the environment changes, so does literature. In terms of messages, contemporary literature offers an insight into the sociocultural panorama of the present era. From the linguistic perspective contemporary works of literature offer a reflection of the modern language with all its peculiarities and changes, featuring the diversity of forms and clichés of communication, grammatical structures and collocations to be used in a variety of everyday-life situations. Thus, contemporary literature shall be considered as sort of multi-format chronicles of the era we are living in.

Without being taught to mind their health, unaware of the dangers behind the extensive use of and dependence on technology and machines, the humanity’s young generation is facing a future with too many health issues to lead a satisfying and productive life, to give birth to healthy children, to work and create. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how blogging can be an effective way of making technology serve as both a deterrent to its excessive use and an advocate of a healthy lifestyle when introduced in higher education within the framework of health-related majors and courses.
