The paper concerns paradigmatic-syntagmatic composition of language. The system is classified into horizontal and vertical dimensions, which are analyzed. The conclusion is made that it is necessary to distinguish between a syntagm and a structure of language. A syntagm is a linear string of classes. A structure is an ordered (non-linear) set of functions.
