The aim of the thesis is to provide a comprehensive study of the Battle of Brody, 13–23 July 1944, and the participation of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS “Galicia” in it, from the circumstances of its formation to the consequences of the defeat for the surviving personnel. The study establishes that the “Galicia” Division emerged in 1943 at the intersection of three incompatible rationales: German pragmatism driven by a shortage of manpower, anti-Soviet sentiments in Galicia, and instrumental state-building calculations of a segment of the local elite. Organizationally, it corresponded to the establishment of a Waffen-SS infantry formation, but had systemic deficiencies, including a predominantly German command structure, incomplete divisional training and coordination, and a lack of experience in large-scale front-line operations. Arriving near Brody as part of the XIII Army Corps, the division occupied the second defensive line and became encircled on 14–17 July 1944 when the 1st Ukrainian Front closed the ring during the Lvov–Sandomierz Offensive. Attempts to break out in the areas of Bilyi Kamin and Pidkamin on 19–23 July ended in the death of most of the division’s personnel: of more than 15,000 soldiers, approximately 3,000 escaped the encirclement. The reorganization of the survivors at Neuhammer in the autumn of 1944 restored the formation’s organizational structure, but failed to reproduce either its initial mobilization potential or the morale of the first draft. The division surrendered to British forces in Austria in May 1945. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the comprehensive comparison of Soviet operational documents, diaspora memoirs, and contemporary Ukrainian and Western scholarship, which makes it possible to avoid both Soviet reductionism and apologetic interpretations. The findings of the study may be used in courses on the history of the Second World War, the military history of Ukraine, studies of collaborationism, and memory studies.
