The qualification thesis is devoted to a comprehensive study of the Spanish Revolution of 1820–1823 and the French intervention of 1823 in the context of international relations in post-Napoleonic Europe. The study analyzes the uprising led by Rafael del Riego, the restoration of the Constitution of Cádiz of 1812, the contradictions of the Liberal Triennium, royalist resistance, the positions of the European powers, and the decisions of the Congress of Verona of 1822. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the Spanish political crisis, the diplomacy of the Holy Alliance, and the practice of external intervention. The methodological framework of the research combines the level-of-analysis method, structural-functional analysis, a comparative approach to the study of revolutions, the theory of institutional adaptation, the psychology of revolutionary elites, the concept of failed revolutions, and a transnational approach, as well as historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical-systemic, and historical-legal methods, the synchronization method, the history of political concepts, and discourse analysis. The study establishes that the revolution of 1820 emerged against the background of the crisis of the absolutist regime, Ferdinand VII’s policies after 1814, growing dissatisfaction within the army, and the continued political significance of the Constitution of Cádiz. The Liberal Triennium remained unstable due to divisions between moderate and radical liberals and active royalist resistance. The decisions of the Congress of Verona in 1822 paved the way for French intervention, which resulted in the restoration of Ferdinand VII’s absolutist rule in 1823. The scientific novelty lies in examining the domestic Spanish events of 1820–1823 in connection with the diplomatic practices of the Holy Alliance, the positions of the great powers, and the problem of legitimizing external intervention. The study demonstrates that the French intervention resulted from the combination of the Spanish revolutionary crisis and the restorationist policy of the European powers. The Spanish Revolution of 1820–1823 revealed the crisis of absolutism, the instability of liberal constitutionalism, and the dependence of domestic political struggles on the position of the great powers, while the French intervention of 1823 demonstrated that the post-Vienna international order permitted the use of force when revolutionary movements were perceived as a threat to monarchical Europe.
