Еволюція британської монархії за правління Джорджа ІІІ (1760-1811 рр.)

Abstract

У дипломній роботі представлені результати дослідження трансформації інституту британської монархії та особливості, пов’язані з цим процесом, упродовж правління короля Джорджа ІІІ з 1760 року до встановлення над ним регентства у 1811 році. Джерельна база роботи включає приватну кореспонденцію монарха, мемуари членів королівської родини, протоколи засідань британського парламенту, законодавчі акти, міжнародні угоди, британську періодику, петиції та звернення. Перший розділ дослідження розглядає перші роки правління короля Джорджа ІІІ, становище інституту монархії в умовах Семирічної війни, періоду міністерської нестабільності та визрівання збройного конфлікту між Великою Британією та Тринадцятьма колоніями, а також її роль у означених процесах. Другий розділ присвячений значенню королівської влади під час війни за незалежність США, перетворенню ключових інститутів державної системи королівства напередодні Французької революції та власне самій політиці Великої Британії впродовж 1789-1801 років і місцю монархії серед подій того часу. Третій розділ досліджує завершення трансформації і закріплення нового становища монархії Джорджа ІІІ в останні роки його самостійного правління, появу і втілення зовнішньополітичної стратегії королівської влади проти наполеонівської Франції та виклики, з якими зіштовхнулася Велика Британія у своєму протистоянні їй. У ході дослідження автор дійшов висновків про те, що з 1760 по 1811 роки Джордж ІІІ намагався присвоїти інституту британської монархії різні ролі та значення в державній системі королівства: від спроб втручатися в політичні процеси до вимушеного дистанціювання від них, зумовленого хворобою суверена, зміцненням позицій уряду й парламенту, переглядом соціальної структури країни тощо. У періоди національних криз королівська влада ставала опорою державної стабільності й «гуртування нації навколо прапора», а по мірі ослаблення Корони – і символом нації навіть у мирний 111 час. Крім того, хоча влада монарха зберегла за собою частину прерогатив, реальний вплив Джорджа ІІІ на такі галузі, як армія, церква чи фінанси, став украй обмеженим, невирішальним. Започаткована ж у цю добу тенденція до незворотного зменшення влади монарха була закріплена й передана наступникам короля на престолі.

The thesis presents the results of a study of the transformation of the institution of the British monarchy and the features associated with this process during the reign of King George III from 1760 until the establishment of the Regency in 1811. The source base of the work includes the monarch’s private correspondence, memoirs of members of the royal family, records of British parliamentary sessions, legislative acts, international treaties, British periodicals, petitions, and appeals. The first chapter of the study examines the early years of King George III’s reign, the state of the monarchy during the Seven Years’ War, the period of ministerial instability, and the emergence of armed conflict between Great Britain and the Thirteen Colonies, as well as its role in these processes. The second chapter is devoted to the significance of royal power during the American War of Independence, the transformation of key institutions of the kingdom’s state system on the eve of the French Revolution, and Britain’s policy during 1789–1801 and the place of the monarchy in the events of that time. The third chapter explores the completion of the transformation and consolidation of the new status of George III’s monarchy during the final years of his personal rule, the emergence and implementation of the royal foreign policy strategy against Napoleonic France, and the challenges Great Britain faced in its confrontation with it. 112 In the course of the study, the author concluded that from 1760 to 1811 George III attempted to assign various roles and meanings to the institution of the British monarchy within the kingdom’s state system: from attempts to intervene in political processes to a forced distancing from them due to the sovereign’s illness, the strengthening of the positions of the government and parliament, and a rethinking of the country’s social structure. During periods of national crisis, royal power became a pillar of state stability and “rallying the nation around the flag,” and as the Crown weakened – a symbol of the nation even in peacetime. In addition, although the monarch retained some prerogatives, George III’s actual influence in areas such as the army, the church, or finance became extremely limited and non-decisive. The tendency toward the irreversible reduction of monarchical power, which began during this era, was consolidated and passed on to the king’s successors.
