Abstract
In researching the American-Soviet relations regarding West Berlin from 1945 to 1971, the author determined that both superpowers sought to gain geopolitical advantage in the region and diminish the influence of their opponent. The Soviet Union and the United States were unwilling to compromise on certain issues concerning West Berlin. Nevertheless, during crisis events, the parties were willing to engage in negotiations and reach agreements regarding West Berlin, recognizing the potential consequences of escalation in Europe and expressing readiness to compromise during the crisis situation. The USSR and the USA repeatedly altered their approaches to the Berlin question based on the global and regional circumstances. The issue of West Berlin played a role as a symbol of political and ideological struggle between the two superpowers and highlighted the necessity of dialogue between them to avoid catastrophe.
