The thesis is devoted to the study of Slavic-Byzantine contacts in the 6th–7th centuries based on written evidence. The aim of the thesis is to systematically examine written sources reflecting contacts between Slavic tribes and the Byzantine Empire, as well as to determine the nature, forms, and evolution of these interactions. The subject of the research is the specific nature of interaction between Slavic tribes and the Byzantine Empire during the 6th–7th centuries, while the object comprises early medieval sources reflecting Slavic-Byzantine contacts during this period. The study employs source studies, comparative-historical, historical-chronological, and critical analysis methods for written sources. Particular attention is paid to the genre-specific characteristics of the sources, the authors’ perspectives, the historical context in which the texts were produced, and the representation of the Slavs in Byzantine and Western European written traditions. The study demonstrates that Slavic-Byzantine contacts in the 6th–7th centuries were multifaceted and included military conflicts, diplomatic agreements, possible economic ties, and cultural and religious influences. Chronicles make it possible to reconstruct the political and military dimensions of these contacts, military treatises reflect the imperial perception of the Slavs as a military adversary, while hagiographic materials reveal the religious interpretation of these interactions. The novelty of the research lies in the comprehensive examination of various groups of written sources and the identification of the evolution of the image of the Slavs in Late Antique and early medieval traditions. The general conclusions demonstrate that written sources of the 6th–7th centuries not only record events related to Slavic-Byzantine contacts but also reflect the specific ways in which these interactions were perceived by authors representing different genres. This makes it possible to view the interaction between the Slavs and Byzantium as a complex historical process combining military, political, cultural, and religious dimensions.
