Домініони Британської імперії в Першій світовій війні: компаративний аналіз

Abstract

Застосовуючи методи порівняння та аналізу під час роботи, а також використовуючи різноманітні джерела, автор дійшов до таких висновків. Британські домініони відіграли важливу роль у перемозі країн Антанти, їх внесок у війну можна прослідкувати у військовій компоненті завдяки залученню регулярних військ та добровольців, з високим ступенем мобілізації наявного чоловічого населення, що в кінці війни спричинило соціально- економічні проблеми та політичний розкол всередині суспільств. Також слід виокремити економічну складову. Так, за рахунок підтримки економіки метрополії шляхом постачання сировини, необхідних товарів та модернізації своїх підприємств домініони забезпечували необхідну стійкість Британської імперії в умовах Першої світової війни. Але при тому кожен домініон мав свої відмінності та особливості у наданні допомоги та у реакції суспільства на війну. Одні домініони повністю ставали на шлях війни, переводячи більшу частину економіки на підтримку метрополії, інші жертвували тим, що вже було набуто довоєнними роками, таким як військовий і торговий флот, інші, за неможливості давати техніку чи достатню кількість сировини, збільшували мобілізаційні потуги і компенсували нерівність наданої допомоги кількістю солдатів. Реакція суспільства теж змінювалась від країни до країни. Так рівень ентузіазму до війни у Південноафриканському союзі був значно нижчим ніж у Тихоокеанських домініонах. У наведеному дослідженні проаналізовано причину цієї різниці.Applying methods of comparison and analysis during the work, as well as using a variety of sources, the author came to the following conclusions. The British Dominions played an important role in the victory of the Entente countries, their contribution to the war can be traced in the military component thanks to the involvement of regular troops and volunteers, with a high degree of mobilization of the available male population, which at the end of the war caused socio-economic problems and political division within societies. The economic component should also be singled out. Thus, by supporting the economy of the metropolis through the supply of raw materials, necessary goods and the modernization of their enterprises, the dominions ensured the necessary stability of the British Empire in the conditions of the First World War. But at the same time, each dominion had its own differences and peculiarities in the provision of aid and in the response of society to the war. Some dominions went completely on the path of war, transferring a large part of the economy to support the metropolis, others sacrificed what had already been acquired in the pre-war years, such as the military and merchant fleet, others, due to the impossibility of providing equipment or a sufficient amount of raw materials, increased mobilization efforts and compensated inequality of the aid given by the number of soldiers. The reaction of society also varied from country to country. So the level of enthusiasm for the war in the Union of South Africa was much lower than in the Pacific Dominions. This study analyzed the reason for this difference.
