The qualification thesis is devoted to an interdisciplinary study of the evolution and sociocultural functioning of the visual image of Prince Volodymyr the Great in the visual arts of Eastern Europe from the late 18th to the early 20th century. The methodological framework of the study is based on the intersection of history, art history, semiotics, and historical memory studies, drawing on the concepts of Jan Assmann and Pierre Nora. The thesis analyzes the image of Prince Volodymyr as an instrument of memory politics and a means of constructing historical and national narratives. Based on 50 key works of art, an iconological typology of representations of the ruler was developed: “Historical Hero,” “Monarch-Ruler,” “Sacred Patron,” “New Constantine,” “Holy Baptizer,” “Epic Hero,” and “National Symbol.” Quantitative analysis was used to trace the transformation of these types across four historical periods. The study examines the secularization of the image of Prince Volodymyr in the academic classicism of the Enlightenment and its subsequent sacralization in the mid- and second half of the 19th century under the influence of the doctrine of “Official Nationality.” Particular attention is paid to the processes of “nationalization” of the image of Prince Volodymyr in Ukrainian art of the modern era, where he was reinterpreted as a historical leader of Ukraine-Rus’. The study establishes that the visual representation of Prince Volodymyr underwent significant transformations in accordance with the socio-political and cultural context, while his image was used to legitimize religious, imperial, and national models of historical memory.
