This qualification thesis is devoted to a comprehensive study of the Kharkiv Offensive conducted by the troops of the Southwestern and Southern Fronts from 12 to 29 May 1942 as part of the military operations on the Soviet-German front during the 1942 campaign. The aim of the research is to identify the specific causes, course, and strategic consequences of the defeat of the Soviet forces, as well as to determine the role of subjective and objective factors that contributed to the military catastrophe in the Southwestern direction. The methodological basis of the study consists of the principles of historicism, scientific objectivity, and systematicity, employing a combination of general scientific and specialized historical methods, including historical-genetic, comparative-historical, and problem-chronological methods. The scientific novelty of the research lies in conducting an unbiased analysis of the events of May 1942 based on a modern source base, in which the miscalculations of the top military and political leadership are considered a key systemic factor in the defeat. The study establishes that the catastrophe resulted from strategic adventurism, the disregard of intelligence reports concerning the concentration of Kleist’s forces, and a delayed response to the German counteroffensive “Fridericus.” The general conclusions demonstrate that the defeat near Kharkiv resulted in irretrievable losses of more than two hundred thousand personnel, the elimination of the Red Army’s offensive potential, and opened the way for the Wehrmacht to advance toward Stalingrad and the Caucasus. The findings of the study may be used for further academic research and in the educational process.
