The third stage of the research project focused on phytoindication analyses of plant communities, refinement of the ecological amplitudes of species and syntaxa, and investigation of plant adaptation mechanisms in relation to climatic and anthropogenic factors. Materials from long-term studies of floodplain phytoplankton were analysed, a database of algal ecological and biological characteristics was refined, and ordination analyses of aquatic and terrestrial vegetation and revisions of lichen herbarium collections were undertaken. The work also included an analysis of invasive plant species in the Kharkiv region and an examination of open biological databases concerning the regulation of secondary carotenoid synthesis in algae capable of accumulating large quantities of these pigments. Experimental studies investigated the effects of cold acclimation on the antioxidant system of triticale seedlings. The results improve understanding of plant and microalgal adaptation to environmental change and may support phytoindication, conservation and biotechnological research.
