Форми передачі етноніму «сіверяни» в літописах

Abstract

The presented paper deals with the question of various forms of the ethnonym “Severians” in the manuscripts of the Primary Chronicle. After analyses of the variations of the forms of this ethnonym in 15 cases of its use in the text of the Primary Chronicle in its 34 manuscripts, dividing their bases into groups by such signs as types of word forms, as well as derivative and non-derivative basis of word forms, the author came to the conclusion that the word form “Sever” and words with non-derivative basis “Sever” occupy the main position among the variants of the forms of the ethnonym “Severians” in the chronicles. Word forms with derived bases with the root “Sever” and the suffix “-ian”, which corresponds to the form “северяне” (Severians) of modern Russian-language historiography, was already present in the earliest known manuscript (XIV cen.).
